Climate-resilient supply chains underpin UAE food security

Climate resilience is rapidly becoming a defining factor in how supply chains are designed across the UAE as businesses navigate growing disruption from extreme weather events, shifting trade routes and increasing pressure to meet sustainability targets.

For Gilbert Abi Zeid, Vice President of Logistics at GMG, logistics infrastructure now sits at the centre of the country’s long-term food security ambitions. He describes it as a “core resilience layer” within the UAE’s food security model because it enables sourcing diversification, supports the movement of goods through ports and distribution networks, and helps maintain supply continuity during periods of disruption.

As climate change increases pressure on global supply chains through extreme weather, water scarcity and transport disruption, Abi Zeid believes food security, climate resilience and agricultural ecosystems are becoming increasingly interconnected. In that environment, climate-resilient logistics is “not just about keeping supply chains moving” but also about “keeping nature intact”, he says.
