Dan Olivier on How Sidel Supports Safer, More Resilient Food Production

Dan Olivier of Sidel

Ahead of Gulfood Manufacturing 2026, Sidel’s Dan Olivier shares his perspective on the often-overlooked role manufacturing plays in food security. From aseptic technology and packaging innovation to line performance and operational resilience, he explores how production decisions can help strengthen the reliability, safety and availability of food.

What food security really looks like on the production line

Food security is not only a question of agriculture, geopolitics or global supply chains. Food and beverage manufacturing is an important part of the picture. Decisions made on the production line affect whether products can be produced safely, remain within specification and reach consumers reliably. For Sidel, this means helping producers protect product safety, improve shelf life, reduce resource use without compromising packaging performance, and keep complete lines operating reliably.

For Dan Olivier, Vice President Equipment Sales, Middle East and Africa at Sidel, the challenge for producers is not simply to react to market changes or disruptions. It is to build production systems that continue to operate safely, consistently and efficiently when pressure builds across the supply chain.

“Food security is often discussed as an upstream issue, but food and beverage manufacturers are part of it too. Our approach is to design production solutions that can meet rising demand and continue to operate safely and consistently without compromising quality,” says Olivier.

Protecting products and extending shelf life

For food and beverage producers, one practical challenge is maintaining product quality across longer and more complex distribution routes. This becomes even more important as consumer demand grows for healthy, fresh-tasting and functional products with few or no preservatives.

Aseptic processing helps producers protect sensitive products without preservatives while supporting product integrity and longer shelf life. Sidel’s Aseptic Predis® X4 combines proven dry preform sterilisation with advanced food safety, flexibility and operational simplicity.

By protecting product quality for longer, aseptic technology can help producers reach wider markets, manage changing demand and reduce the amount of product lost before it reaches consumers.

Shelf life is therefore not only a product-quality consideration. It also improves availability and gives producers greater flexibility to manage real-world distribution challenges.

“Longer shelf life gives producers greater flexibility to manage changing demand, reach wider markets and reduce product waste. This is one practical way packaging technology contributes to a more resilient food and beverage supply chain,” Olivier explains.

Using less material without compromising performance

Producers face ongoing pressure to reduce packaging material, both to advance their sustainability goals and to manage costs. But reducing weight cannot come at the expense of the package’s strength, stability or ability to protect the product.

Packaging optimisation must therefore balance material reduction with the performance required during production, handling, transport and use.

“Packaging optimisation is about finding the right balance: using fewer resources while maintaining the strength and product protection required throughout the supply chain,” says Olivier.

This balance is at the heart of EvoBLOW Laser, the world’s first industrialised laser-powered heating system for PET blowing.

The innovation marks a new era after 45 years of halogen-based heating, using precise laser control to place material where it is most needed in the container.

As bottle weights fall and recycled PET content rises, precise material distribution becomes increasingly important to maintain consistent packaging quality and performance.

EvoBLOW Laser enables lighter yet stronger containers, consistent quality and improved performance with recycled PET, helping producers use resources more efficiently while maintaining the packaging performance needed throughout production and distribution.

Keeping the complete line performing

Reliable production depends on more than the performance of any one machine. It depends on how equipment works together across the complete line, and how effectively the line can be operated and maintained over time.

Changeovers, container handling, accumulation, maintenance and operator interaction all influence day-to-day efficiency, product quality and production continuity.

Sidel brings together integrated equipment, lifecycle services and digital tools to design the right-fit solution for each producer’s current and future needs. Services and technical support then help maintain performance, anticipate issues and adapt the line as requirements change.

“Manufacturers need safe and efficient production, but they also need systems their teams can operate and maintain without unnecessary complexity. The gains that matter are those that keep the complete line performing reliably over its lifecycle,” Olivier adds.

Looking ahead to Gulfood Manufacturing 2026

At Gulfood Manufacturing 2026, Sidel looks forward to discussing how food and beverage producers can build safer, more efficient and more resilient operations while continuing to meet changing consumer demand.

Visitors can explore EvoBLOW Laser, discuss food safety and aseptic solutions, and learn how Sidel’s complete-line expertise, digital tools and lifecycle services can support performance over time.

“Food security is not delivered by one technology or one investment. It comes from thousands of decisions—from food safety and packaging design to line integration, daily operation and lifecycle support. Each decision contributes to safer, more reliable and more efficient production,” Olivier concludes.

Meet Sidel from 3 to 5 November 2026 in Hall 3, Stand A3-4.
