Anthea Ayache

Founder, The Ethicalist

Anthea Ayache is a journalist, broadcaster, and writer with almost 20 years’ experience in the media industry. Starting out as a radio co-presenter, then running her own solo breakfast programme in Beirut at the turn of the century, Anthea returned to the UK where she worked as a ‘swing jock’ at the British Forces BFBS radio out of Catterick Garrison, covering programs that hooked up families live on air to their soldier relatives fighting far from home in Afghanistan. In 2010 she moved to Dubai to work for Virgin Radio as a contemporary hits presenter but found herself inadvertently drawn to the newsroom. She was moved within the network to Dubai Eye as the flagship news presenter on the UAE’s number one Business Breakfast Show. There she presented live news bulletins every 15 minutes covering breaking news events such as the demise of Colonel Gadhafi in Libya and rolling coverage of the Arab Spring including Syria’s civil war. A trip to Jordan to see a friend would inadvertently see her report live from the Zaatari Refugee Camp for displaced Syrians fleeing the fighting. She was one of the first international journalists to do so. Upon her return to the UAE she wrote her first piece for Gulf News, an article that was spotted by the editor of Friday magazine, at the time the UAE’s most widely circulated weekend publication. Asked to submit a 3,000-word article on the experiences of the refuges with who she had spoken, her first article made the front page of the magazine and main feature. Her destiny was sealed. Moving to the print department of Gulf News, Anthea became a senior features writer at Friday magazine, delivering quality content for the Making a Difference section which highlighted injustices and charitable solutions to world problems. She travelled extensively to highlight humanitarian issues from water shortages in Cambodia to child trafficking in Vietnam. She also travelled on many occasions to high-risk areas such as the Syrian border to highlight the needs of displaced women and children, and to Afghanistan, where she filed reports four times, travelling independently to remote and hostile parts of the dysfunctional country. In 2018 – at the age of 40 - Anthea stepped out of the workforce to concentrate on having children. Successfully becoming a mother of two, this year she launched The Ethicalist, a digital platform for sustainable lifestyles with a focus on saving the planet but, always true to her humanitarian heart, about saving its residents too.
